Dental Oncology Fellowship

The fellowship in dental oncology is a one-year program intended for a dentist interested in gaining further clinical and medical skills in managing patients with a cancer diagnosis, in particular those which impact the oral and maxillofacial complex. The fellowship year will involve rotations within the dental oncology department, including general dentistry, maxillofacial prosthetics, oral pathology/medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery.

The fellows will spend half of their time each week seeing patients prior to, during, or after their oncologic therapy for dental examinations and treatment planning, as well as providing most required dental care. This will include extractions, restorative and prosthetic work. Mentorship is available from staff general and specialist dentists; referrals within the department are common. Fellows will also be expected to perform bedside examinations for patients in the ICU who cannot be safely transferred for care within the department itself.

In addition, considerable time will be spent in the departments of radiation and surgical oncology (head and neck cancer patients) and medical oncology (patients with hematologic malignancies and patients on anti-resorptive therapy).

Fellows will also have dedicated time for education and to produce research on behalf of the department. An academic lecture series encompasses one half day a week where topics related to treatment of our patients is discussed.

The stipend for the year is based off the equivalent pay for a medical fellow at a similar level of training, approximately $65,000. Interested candidates should submit an up-to-date CV as well as a letter of intent outlining their interest in the program. A letter of reference addressed to “The Dental Oncology Fellowship Selection Committee” is also required. This letter should come from someone who supervised (or is currently supervising) the candidate at their most recent academic endeavour and can attest to their skills in communication, clinical skills, and research. Only those applicants with a dental specialty degree, hospital dental residency/advanced education in general dentistry residency (or equivalent) or a minimum of 2-years of experience in clinical practice will be considered.

Applicants with Canadian dental licensure (ability to practice in Canada):
Applications for the fellowship program open October 1st and rolling interviews will be conducted. The application deadline is January 1st. Please confirm receipt of your application at [email protected] if you have not received a response in two weeks.

Applicants with international dental licensure (with the current ability to practice in countries outside of Canada):
Applications for international positions are open on a rolling basis throughout the year. Due to the overwhelming number of international applications that we receive, only those that are invited for an interview will be contacted directly.
